The Servant is Still the Greatest

The Servant is Still the Greatest

Mt 23:11-12 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.  And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

The spanish ministry of New Heights Baptist Church had an amazing day on Sunday!  They invited hundreds of people during the week and over 90 first-time guests showed up.  48 people trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior!  11 people were baptized!  There were 269 people in the spanish services! It was a day of miracles.  It was a rewarding day for Pastor Gomez, his family, and his people.

After a week like that everybody involved is usually pretty tired.  Thousands of doors had been knocked.  Lots of groceries had been given away.  Smiles and hugs had been given.  Sunday School lessons had been taught.  People had given of themselves until they were exhausted.  And nobody gives more on a busy day like this than the preacher’s wife.

I was humbled on Monday morning to see Mrs. Gomez, the spanish pastor’s wife, the first lady of the spanish ministry, the last person most churches might expect to see - mopping the floors of the church.  With a joyful spirit just to be serving the Lord, she mopped every bit of tile in the foyer and kitchen areas.

What a refreshing sight to see such a humble servant of God that loves supporting her husband and serving her church.  It’s no wonder that her children love serving God!

On Monday I saw a wonderful demonstration of a servant-hearted Christian who, instead of finding reasons not to do the most basic of jobs, did it with a smile on her face.  We are blessed to have such a wonderful example demonstrated through the life of our spanish pastor’s wife!

Matthew 25:23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

The Miracles of Faith Promise Giving

Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Jen and I started giving toward missions through faith promise shortly after we got married.  Over the years we have learned so much more about the way God blesses as we give to His work.  As a boy, I often heard older people use the phrase, “You can’t out-give God”, but now as an adult I understand it.

In August New Heights Baptist Church held it’s third missions conference.  Our people committed almost twice as much toward missions as we did last year.  Right away I began hearing stories of how God was providing so that our people could give toward missions.  I would love for you to write your story of God providing for your missions commitment in the comments section of this blog.

Thanks, Pastor Reyes

The “Be Not Afraids” of the Bible

To the Children of Israel getting ready to go into the Promised Land -

Deuteronomy 20:1 When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

  • God told them that they would face horses and chariots.
  • God reminded them what happened the last time horses and chariots fought against them at the Red Sea
  • Don’t be afraid when someone who is your enemy wants to hurt you.

To Joshua getting ready to fight against Jericho –

Joshua 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

  • The Israelite army without any trained soldiers or superior weapons conquered an impossible city.
  • Don’t be afraid when you are facing an impossible situation.

To Elijah about to face the wicked king of Israel –

2 Kings 1:15 And the angel of the LORD said unto Elijah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the king.

  • God had demonstrated His power to protect Elijah away from the wicked king Ahaziah, but now He was being told to go stand face to face with him.
  • Don’t be afraid when you have to stand face to face before a wicked leader.

To King Hezekiah when the king of Assyria threatened to destroy the nation of Israel –

2 Kings 19:6 And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

  • Rab-shakeh, the Assyrian king’s servant, insulted God and made fun of the people for worshipping Him.
  • Then he threatened to destroy them.
  • Don’t be afraid when you are threatened by someone who wants to hurt you.

To King Jehoshaphat when he was about to be destroyed by three armies much larger than his –

2 Chronicles 20:15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.

  • When the people began to sing and praise God, God fought the battle for them.
  • Don’t be afraid when there are more people against you than for you.

To King Hezekiah when Sennacherib king of Assyria came with a much larger army to destroy Jerusalem –

2 Chronicles 32:7 Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:
2 Chronicles 32:8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

  • The “arm of flesh” seemed stronger, and indeed was stronger than Hezekiah’s army, but the enemy wasn’t fighting against Hezekiah – they were fighting against God.
  • Don’t be afraid when your enemy appears to be stronger and to have more resources than you.

To all who have anything to be afraid of –

Proverbs 3:25 Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.
Proverbs 3:26 For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

  • There is no need to worry about the unexpected.
  • One person said, “Worrying works great for me.  95% of the things I worry about never happen.”
  • Don’t be afraid even when you have a justifiable reason to be afraid; Danger will come, but God will be there to meet it.

To Jeremiah the prophet when God called him to preach to a nation that wanted nothing to do with God –

Jeremiah 1:8 Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.

  • Don’t be afraid when God calls you to do something harder than you think you can handle.

To Ezekiel the prophet when God called him to preach to Israel after they were taken as slaves to Babylon –

Ezekiel 2:6 And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.

  • Three verses earlier – Ezekiel 2:3 And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this very day.
  • Don’t be afraid when God calls you to serve Him in a difficult situation.

When the disciples were in the middle of a stormy sea and thought they saw a ghost walking toward them on the water –

Matthew 14:27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

  • Jesus told the disciple to get in the boat and go to the other side of the sea in the middle of the night.
  • Halfway across, a storm just about destroyed them.
  • To make things worse, they thought they saw a ghost.
    • It’s bad when one person  thinks they see a ghost, but when all 12 of you see it – you know you’re in trouble.
  • Then Jesus called Peter to walk out to Him on the water.
  • Don’t be afraid when you are obeying God and you find yourself in the middle of a dangerous storm.

When Peter, James, and John had just realized they were in the presence of God on the mount of Transfiguration and had fallen on their faces –

Matthew 17:7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

  • They realized that when they were with Jesus they were in the presence of God.
  • When Jesus spoke to them they understood that God’s love for them was so great that He wanted to be with them even though they were sinful men.
  • Don’t be afraid when you become acutely aware of sin in your life; just continue growing your relationship with God.

When some of the disciples had seen the empty tomb and were worried and confused –

Matthew 28:10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

  • All hope was gone.
  • The man they had left everything to follow had been killed and his body was missing.
  • Suddenly Jesus appeared to them and changed everything!
  • Don’t be afraid when the future seems hopeless.

When encouraging the disciples to bravely face persecution –

Luke 12:4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

  • Don’t be afraid when standing for what you know is right.

When Paul the Apostle arrived in Corinth and God wanted him to stay for a while and start a church –

Acts 18:9 Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace:

  • Don’t be afraid when the ministry God leads you to either doesn’t make sense or is frowned upon by others.

To all those who suffer or are persecuted or are terrorized for their faith –

1Peter 3:14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

  •
    • Peter’s brother, James, had already been murdered for being a Christian.
    • Many others in Peter’s life had suffered and died for their faith.
    • Jesus had explained to Peter that he would also die as a martyr.
    • Not only was Peter calm, but he was happy.
    • Don’t be afraid when you are called upon to suffer for the cause of Christ.

True Love

We’ve all heard so much about true love, yet we have such a hard time finding it sometimes.  When we stand at the altar and repeat our wedding vows the preacher asks us something like, “Do you promise to love, honor, and cherish…”  Then we say something like, “I do…” unless we’re really nervous and forget our lines.

As a husband, I want to love my wife in a way that is going make her feel like she is really loved – not like I’m just saying the words I’m supposed to say.

If you’re in a dating relationship it is extremely important for you to be able to recognize whether the feelings you have toward each other are love – or a well-disguised imposter.

You’ve probably heard that love is a decision – but what kind of decision is it?  What is it a decision to do?  In 1 Corinthians 13, God took the time and effort to help us understand what true love is – and what it isn’t.

First, the straight-out-of-the-Bible definition of love (charity):

  • Suffereth long and is kind
  • Envieth not
  • Vaunteth not itself
  • Doth not behave itself unseemly
  • Seeketh not her own
  • Is not easily provoked
  • Thinketh no evil
  • Rejoiceth not in iniquity
  • Rejoiceth in truth
  • Beareth all things
  • Believeth all things
  • Hopeth all things
  • Endureth all things
  • Never faileth

Second, some easy-to-understand definitions:

  • Suffereth long and is kind
    • Love puts up with inconveniences with a good attitude.
  • Envieth not
    • Love lifts up others instead of self.
  • Vaunteth not itself
    • Love is not proud or stuck up.
  • Doth not behave itself unseemly
    • Love does what is right.
  • Seeketh not her own
    • Love looks for ways to help others.
  • Is not easily provoked
    • Love responds properly to adversity.
  • Thinketh no evil
    • Love thinks correctly.
  • Rejoiceth not in iniquity
    • Love doesn’t enjoy what is not right.
  • Rejoiceth in truth
    • Love gets excited about what is right.
  • Beareth all things
    • Love carries the weight others share.
  • Believeth all things
    • Love gives the benefit of the doubt.
  • Hopeth all things
    • Love always hopes for the best.
  • Endureth all things
    • Love keeps on through hard times.
  • Never faileth
    • Love doesn’t quit and always succeeds.

If you are in love with someone try this:

  • Instead of just saying “I love you,” show “I love you.”
    • What would happen if a wife would put up with the inconveniences her husband caused her – with a good attitude?
    • What would happen if a husband enjoyed when his wife got a compliment, extra credit, or a promotion without becoming jealous?
    • What would happen if a wife never again said, “He just doesn’t meet my needs?”
    • What would happen if a husband did what was right – not just convenient or popular among his friends?
    • What would happen if a wife made an effort to find ways to help her husband with daily tasks?
    • What would happen if a husband responded kindly when his wife said something to make him mad?
    • What would happen if a husband and wife both allowed the Holy Spirit to control their thoughts so they thought about right things instead of sinful imaginations and worrisome scenarios?
    • What would happen if neither of you enjoyed sinful entertainment?
    • What would happen if right things and relationships excited you instead of wrong things?
    • What would happen if a husband knew that his wife would listen to his problems and help him carry his load?
    • What would happen if a wife knew that her husband was going to give her the benefit of the doubt when she made a mistake?
    • What would happen if a husband knew that his wife was pulling for him and hoping for the best instead of secretly hoping he’d fail?
    • What would happen if neither of you had to worry about the future of your relationship because you knew your spouse would stay with you through hard times?
    • What would happen if divorce wasn’t an option, you were both determined not to quit, and you knew you would eventually succeed?

Maybe you are at a point in a relationship where you are trying to decide if you are dating the right person.  Here’s an idea.  Let that person prove they love you before you believe what they are telling you.

  • Here are some questions to ask yourself:
    • Does he put up with inconveniences that I cause with a good attitude?
    • Does he lift me up instead of himself?
    • Is he proud or stuck up?
    • Does he always try to do what is right?
    • Does he look for ways to help me?
    • Does he respond kindly when someone (including me) provokes him?
    • Does he have a clean thought life?
    • Does it bother him to see somebody do wrong?
    • Does he get excited about right things?
    • Is he willing to carry the weight of my problems?
    • Does he give me the benefit of the doubt when I make a mistake?
    • Does he hope for my best?
    • Does he ever talk about or show signs of quitting when challenges arise?
    • Is he in it for he long haul?

All of these long “little” questions are tools for answering one short “big” question, “Does he truly love me?”  Hopefully you’ll be able to recognize true love and its evil imposter – self-love.

Walking with God

Isn’t it amazing that the God who created us desires a close relationship with us?  Even more amazing when we stop and think about all that we have done to displease Him!

Here are a few thoughts from Isaiah 43 about walking with God:

“But now thus saith the Lord that created thee…”

Remember this is what God thinks of His relationship with you!

  • Posession by God  – “for I have redeemed thee…thou art mine” 43:1
  • Identity with God – “called thee by thy name” 43:1
  • Fellowship with God – “I will be with thee” 43:2
  • Protection of God – “they shall not overflow thee…thou shalt not be burned” 43:2
  • Valued by God – “Since thou wast precious in my sight” 43:4
  • Future promised by God – “I will bring thy seed” 43:5
  • Purpose for God – “I have created him for my glory” 43:7

Bible verses like this make me want to spend lots of time with a God that loves me more than I can understand!

Missions Planning

As we get closer to 2011 the staff of New Heights Baptist Church is doing a lot of planning.

  • We are working on annual planners and budgets.
  • We have a theme chosen for each of the next three years leading up to our 10th anniversary.
  • The part I’m most excited about has to do with missions and church planting.  I can’t wait for Vision Sunday to share this plan with our church!

A simple purpose

Since the first day of New Heights Baptist Church our purpose has really been very simple. It comes in four parts:
1. Souls saved
2. Christians Discipled
3. Families Strengthened
4. Give God the Glory

Our Motto has been “Families Succeeding Together”, and our logo has been a family with it’s arms raised in victory. We’re doing everything we can to make a difference to people in the Albuquerque area – both individuals and families.
